Plant of the month August

Discover our plant of the month for August - Helenium. A vibrant perennial for late season colour

About the Helenium

Helenium, commonly known as sneezeweed, is a hardy and colourful perennial that adds a vibrant splash of late-season colour to gardens. Helenium is part of the Asteraceae family, which also includes daisies and sunflowers. Despite its misleading common name, the plant does not actually cause sneezing; historically, its dried leaves were used to make snuff, hence the name.

Helenium is prized for its daisy-like flowers that bloom in rich shades of yellow, orange, red, and bronze. These blooms typically appear in late summer and continue into the Autumn, making Helenium an excellent choice for extending a garden’s seasonal interest. The flower heads are made up of a central cone surrounded by slightly drooping ray petals, resembling miniature sunflowers. Depending on the species and cultivar, plants can grow anywhere from 2 to 5 feet tall, forming upright clumps with sturdy stems.

At Thompson's we grow a number of varieties of Helenium, the most commonly cultivated varieties include Helenium autumnale and hybrids derived from it. These hybrids are particularly valued for their vibrant colours, long flowering season, and resistance to pests and diseases. Popular cultivars such as 'Moerheim Beauty,' are beloved for their bold hues and ability to attract pollinators.

Why Buy Me?

Helenium thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It prefers moist conditions but can tolerate brief dry spells once established. To encourage healthy growth and prevent legginess, many gardeners pinch back the stems in early summer. Deadheading spent flowers can also promote additional blooms, although some gardeners prefer to leave seed heads intact for winter interest and wildlife support.

One of the great benefits of growing Helenium is its attractiveness to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its nectar-rich flowers provide an important food source during the late summer and early fall when many other blooms have faded. Additionally, Helenium’s upright habit and long stems make it an excellent candidate for cut flower arrangements.

Top tips

In terms of care, Helenium is relatively low-maintenance. However, because it grows vigorously and can spread by underground rhizomes, it may need to be divided every few years to maintain its vigour and prevent overcrowding. Division is best done in early spring or autumn. It is also advisable to stake taller varieties to prevent them from flopping over in heavy rain or wind.

Despite its robust appearance, Helenium is not entirely immune to garden challenges. In overly wet soils or poorly ventilated areas, it may be susceptible to mildew or root rot. Ensuring good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering can help mitigate these issues.
