Sedum Autumn Joy

Why Buy Me?

  • Clusters of tiny flowers
  • Late summer to autumn flowering
  • Easy to grow in most conditions

Growing Conditions

Light:
Prefers full sun for best flowering, compact growth, and vibrant colour. Can tolerate light shade, though may become leggy and flower less profusely.

Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile to poor soil. Tolerates a range of soil types including sandy, gravelly, and chalky. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.

Exposure:
Performs well in both sheltered and exposed locations. Fully hardy across the UK, withstanding frost and cold winters.

Drought Tolerance:
Excellent drought tolerance once established. Ideal for low-water gardens and dry, sunny borders.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before extremes of heat or cold.

Spacing:
Space plants approximately 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Mature height reaches 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) with a similar spread.

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water moderately during the first growing season. Once established, only water during prolonged dry spells. Requires minimal feeding—apply a light dressing of compost in spring if desired.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to improve soil and suppress weeds, though not strictly necessary. Cut back flower stems in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Leave seed-heads through winter for structure and wildlife interest.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn or from stem cuttings in summer. Easy to propagate and divide to rejuvenate older clumps.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Fleshy, blue-green leaves emerge and form a tidy mound.

Summer:
Green broccoli-like flower heads begin to develop, gradually turning pink.

Autumn:
Masses of deep pink to rosy-red flowers bloom from late summer into autumn. Foliage may take on warm tones as temperatures drop.

Winter:
Flowers dry to a bronze-brown, adding structure and visual interest. Seed-heads can be left for architectural appeal and to feed birds.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Dried seed-heads provide shelter and food for birds and beneficial insects in winter.

Garden Use:
Ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, rock gardens, and drought-tolerant or low-maintenance plantings. Excellent in mixed perennial borders for late-season colour.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:

  • Rudbeckia

  • Echinacea

  • Salvia

  • Ornamental grasses (e.g., Stipa, Miscanthus)

  • Perovskia

Combines beautifully with other late-flowering perennials and structural plants for long-lasting, vibrant displays.
