  • Long flowering period
  • Hugely popular
  • Easy to grow

Growing Conditions

Light:
Prefers full sun for the best flowering. Will tolerate light shade, but flowering may be less prolific and stems may become leggy.

Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Avoid overly rich or waterlogged soils, which can cause root rot.

Exposure:
Grows well in both sheltered and moderately exposed locations. Hardy across the UK, tolerating cold winters and frost.

Drought Tolerance:
Highly drought-tolerant once established. Ideal for dry, sunny borders and low-maintenance planting schemes.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or autumn when soil is moist and temperatures are moderate.

Spacing:
Space plants approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Mature height typically reaches 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) with a similar spread.

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water during prolonged dry spells, especially during the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Cut back faded flower spikes after the first flush to encourage reblooming. Prune back hard in late autumn or early spring to tidy and rejuvenate the plant.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn, or by softwood cuttings in late spring. Can also be grown from seed, though cultivars may not come true.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Foliage emerges; tall flower spikes begin forming in late spring.

Summer:
Dense spikes of deep violet-purple flowers appear from late spring through summer. Deadheading can prolong flowering.

Autumn:
May produce a second flush of flowers in early autumn if cut back after the first bloom. Foliage may take on slightly muted tones.

Winter:
Deciduous; dies back to the ground. Dormant through winter but reliably re-emerges in spring.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Excellent nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. A valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Garden Use:
Ideal for perennial borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens, and pollinator-friendly plantings. Works well en-masse or in mixed combinations for colour and texture.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:

  • Echinacea

  • Achillea

  • Rudbeckia

  • Nepeta

  • Sedum (Hylotelephium)

Combines beautifully with other drought-tolerant, sun-loving perennials and ornamental grasses.
