Trees
Trees absorb harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, storing the carbon while releasing fresh oxygen for us to breath. By planting a tree in your garden you will help to reduce your carbon footprint, as well as leaving a lasting focal point to your garden that can be appreciated for generations. At Thompson's we have a large selection of trees at all our garden centres. Come and have a chat with our plant team, and we'll help you choose the perfect tree for your garden. Our web shop contains only a small selection of our favourite trees that we stock, and don't forget we can deliver! Find your local branch of Thompson's

Planting trees for the future
“One generation plants the tree, another gets the shade” – so goes the Chinese proverb, and at Thompson’s, we couldn’t agree more. Planting a fruit tree is one of the most rewarding things you can do in your garden. While it’s true that trees grow over decades, you won’t have to wait long to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Our range includes traditional apples and pears, as well as cherries, apricots, and even figs – all available from our Chislehurst, Newchurch, Canterbury and Welling garden centres. With the right care, your tree will provide beauty, structure and harvests for years to come.
Choosing the right spot to plant a tree
To give your tree the best start in life, choosing the right planting location is key. Most fruit trees thrive in full sun and sheltered positions, though some, like cherries, will tolerate partial shade. A sunny, well-drained spot ensures strong growth and plentiful fruit. Once you’ve picked your spot, dig a hole one-third wider than the rootball and as deep as the container the tree came in (or to the ‘soil mark’ on bare-root trees). Loosen the soil at the base of the hole to help the roots establish more easily.
Planting Trees: step-by-step
Next, take your tree stake and drive it into the bottom of the hole at a 45° angle, facing into the prevailing wind. It should meet the trunk about halfway up to provide solid support. Position the tree in the hole beside the stake, making sure the roots are spread out if it’s bare-root. Back-fill with soil, firming gently as you go to anchor the tree in place. Water thoroughly so moisture reaches deep into the root zone, then mulch with well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk to prevent rot.
Giving your tree the right care
Secure your tree to the stake using a specialist rubber tree tie in a figure-eight pattern – these are designed to support without damaging the bark and allow for future growth. You’ll find everything you need for planting, staking and feeding fruit trees in our garden centres and webshop. Whether you're planting one tree or several, we’re here to help you grow something truly lasting.
