Does Your Soil Need a Boost?
Not sure if your soil needs improving? There are a few telltale signs to look out for. If your plants are struggling to grow or appear weak and spindly, if water either drains too quickly or not at all after rain or watering, or if your soil feels compacted, overly sandy, or clearly lacks organic matter, it’s likely in need of a boost. Starting a new bed or vegetable patch on bare ground is another good reason to enrich your soil. If any of these sound familiar, it’s time to give your soil a helping hand.
Soil Improvers We Recommend
- Levington Organic Soil Conditioner: Made from composted materials, this improves soil structure and boosts moisture retention. Ideal for vegetable patches, borders, and beds.
- Levington Top Soil: A premium blend of natural top soil and organic matter—great for levelling lawns, filling raised beds, or planting trees and shrubs.
- Oaktree Horse Manure: Well-rotted and ready to use, this classic garden remedy is rich in nutrients and fantastic for improving clay or poor soils.
Whether you’re working with sandy soil, heavy clay, or something in between, our team is here to help.
How to Use Soil Improvers
Using soil improvers is easy:
- Spread a generous layer (5–10cm) over the soil surface.
- Fork or dig it into the top 15–20cm of soil.
- Water well, and let nature do the rest!
For best results, improve soil before planting or at the start of the growing season. You can also top up beds and borders each year to keep the soil in peak condition.
Prevent Problems Before They Start
While soil improvers are great for restoring tired soil, regular maintenance makes a big difference too. Mulching with bark or compost, rotating crops, and adding organic matter throughout the year can help you avoid major issues down the line.
