Coastal Plants
Creating a beautiful coastal garden doesn't mean limiting yourself to a handful of hardy plants. While seaside gardens present unique challenges such as salt-laden winds, sandy soils and exposed conditions, there is an impressive range of shrubs, perennials, grasses and trees that flourish in coastal locations across the UK. Whether you live on a coastal site or simply have an exposed, windy garden inland, choosing the right plants can transform your outdoor space into a colourful, wildlife-friendly haven that looks stunning throughout the year.
At Thompson’s Garden Centre, you’ll find a fantastic selection of coastal plants chosen for their ability to cope with more exposed conditions. From hardy shrubs and colourful perennials to ornamental grasses and ground-cover plants, there are plenty of ways to create a thriving garden that proves tough conditions don’t have to mean compromising on beauty.

What makes a good coastal plant?
Plants growing near the coast often have to work a little harder. Salt-laden winds can scorch delicate foliage, while exposed gardens may offer little shelter from strong gusts. Sandy soils can also drain quickly, meaning plants need to cope with periods of dryness once established.
Fortunately, many plants are naturally suited to these conditions. Some have tough, leathery or waxy leaves that help protect them from wind and salt, while others have deep or well-developed root systems that help them find moisture. Silver foliage, compact growth and flexible stems are also common characteristics of plants that perform well in coastal locations.
Choosing plants that are suited to your garden from the start means less stress, less maintenance and, most importantly, a garden that can flourish.
Create movement with ornamental grasses
There is something especially magical about grasses moving in a coastal breeze. Ornamental grasses bring softness, texture and a wonderful sense of movement to the garden, making them perfect partners for flowering perennials and shrubs.
Depending on the space available, excellent choices for a coastal-style planting scheme can include:
- Stipa gigantea for height and shimmering flower stems
- Miscanthus sinensis for elegant foliage and movement
- Festuca glauca for compact mounds of blue-grey foliage
- Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ for strong vertical structure
- Marram Grass for an authentic coastal feel
Try combining grasses with Verbena, Eryngium or Achillea for a naturalistic scheme that looks relaxed yet beautifully considered.

Fill your coastal garden with colour
A tough garden certainly doesn’t have to be a dull one! Coastal planting can be packed with colour, fragrance and flowers.
Lavender is a classic choice for sunny, free-draining gardens. Its fragrant flowers and silvery foliage suit the relaxed look of a seaside garden beautifully. Eryngium, also known as Sea Holly, is another fantastic option. Its striking metallic blue flowers and architectural shape add drama to borders while coping well with exposed conditions.
Other excellent flowering plants include Verbena bonariensis, with tall, airy stems that move beautifully in the breeze, and Achillea, which produces colourful, flat flower heads over a long flowering period. Nepeta is another easy-going favourite, while Kniphofia brings bold spikes of fiery colour to sunny borders.
For lower-growing colour, consider Armeria maritima, better known as Sea Thrift. Its neat evergreen foliage and pretty pink flowers make it ideal for the front of borders, rock gardens and gravel gardens.
Add year-round structure with coastal shrubs
Shrubs form the backbone of a successful garden, providing shape, height and structure even when many flowering plants are resting.
Griselinia is a popular choice for coastal gardens thanks to its glossy evergreen foliage and ability to tolerate wind and salt. It is particularly useful for creating hedges and shelter, which can make it easier to grow slightly more delicate plants elsewhere in the garden.
Other excellent choices include Escallonia, Hebe and Elaeagnus. These hardy shrubs can help create attractive boundaries, provide year-round greenery and make exposed gardens feel more sheltered. Rosa rugosa is another coastal favourite, offering beautiful flowers followed by colourful hips.
Don’t forget wildlife
Many plants that cope well with coastal conditions are also fantastic for wildlife. Lavender, Hebe, Sedum, Sea Holly, Verbena bonariensis, Buddleja, Achillea, Sea Thrift and Nepeta can all provide valuable food for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
By combining plants with different flowering periods, you can create a garden that offers nectar and pollen across a much longer season. Leave some seed heads standing through autumn and winter too, as they can provide food and shelter while adding beautiful structure to your borders.

Give your coastal plants the best possible start
Even tough plants need a little help while they establish. Prepare the soil before planting and add organic matter where needed. In very free-draining sandy soils, this can help improve moisture retention and give new roots the best possible start.
Water new plants regularly during their first growing season, particularly during long dry spells. Once established, many coastal plants become much more drought tolerant. Adding a layer of mulch can also help the soil retain moisture while suppressing weeds.
If your garden is particularly exposed, consider using wind-tolerant shrubs to create a natural shelter belt. This can reduce the impact of strong winds and open up even more planting possibilities.
