Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in full sun to partial shade. In colder regions, a sunny, sheltered position is recommended to protect it from frost and enhance flowering.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerates a range of soil types including loamy, sandy, or chalky soils. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Best in sheltered or moderately exposed positions. Tolerates coastal conditions and urban pollution. In colder regions, protection from cold winds and severe frost is advised.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established. Requires regular watering during dry spells in the first year. Benefits from occasional watering in prolonged droughts to maintain flower production.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when soil temperatures are warm and moisture is adequate for root establishment.
Spacing:
Space 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart when planting in groups or borders, allowing room for natural mounding habit.
Watering:
Keep well-watered during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods. Avoid overwatering, especially in winter.
Fertilization:
Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy foliage and abundant flowers.
Mulching:
Mulch annually in spring with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.
Pruning:
Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. Avoid cutting into old wood, as regrowth can be limited.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring to early summer or semi-ripe cuttings in late summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Glossy evergreen foliage begins to grow actively. Rich green leaves sometimes have a purplish tinge in cooler climates.
Summer:
Forms a neat, dome-shaped shrub with dense foliage. Flower buds begin to develop late in the season.
Autumn:
Main flowering season. Produces spikes of purple to violet flowers from late summer through autumn (August–October), offering late-season colour when other plants fade.
Winter:
Evergreen. Retains foliage and structure throughout winter. May have purplish foliage highlights in cold weather, adding winter interest.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators with its late-season nectar-rich flowers. Valuable for extending pollinator support into autumn.
Garden Use:
Excellent for mixed borders, low hedges, containers, coastal gardens, and urban landscapes. Its compact form and evergreen habit make it ideal for year-round structure and color.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other late-flowering perennials and evergreens such as Aster, Sedum, Salvia, and Heuchera. Complements ornamental grasses and silver-foliaged plants like Stachys or Lavandula for a soft contrast.
