Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in full sun but tolerates partial shade. Full sun encourages dense, upright growth and healthy foliage.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Will grow in loamy, sandy, or clay soils as long as drainage is good. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH.
Exposure:
Ideal for sheltered to moderately exposed sites. Very tolerant of salt-laden winds, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. Can be grown inland or in urban environments with equal success.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once fully established. Regular watering is important during the first growing season; established plants cope well with dry spells but benefit from occasional deep watering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before extreme weather conditions.
Spacing:
Space 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart for hedging. For specimen planting, allow 1.5–2 metres (5–6.5 feet) between plants.
Watering:
Water deeply and regularly during the establishment period. Once mature, water during prolonged dry spells to support lush growth.
Fertilization:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote healthy foliage and growth. Overfeeding is not usually necessary.
Mulching:
Mulch annually in spring with organic compost or bark to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil structure.
Pruning:
Prune in late spring or early summer after the last frost. Trim regularly to shape or maintain a dense hedge. Hard pruning is tolerated if rejuvenation is needed.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or hardwood cuttings in late autumn. Rooting is generally straightforward under warm, moist conditions.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New apple-green foliage appears; fresh growth is particularly vibrant and soft-textured.
Summer:
Dense, leathery, glossy green foliage maintains a tidy, upright form. Often used as an evergreen screen or backdrop.
Autumn:
Foliage remains evergreen with little seasonal change. Continues to provide structure and colour into the cooler months.
Winter:
Retains glossy, green foliage year-round. Excellent for providing winter interest and screening in cold or exposed gardens.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Provides shelter and nesting opportunities for birds. While not a major nectar or pollen plant, it contributes to overall garden biodiversity through its dense cover.
Garden Use:
Widely used as a formal or informal hedge, privacy screen, or windbreak. Also works well as a standalone specimen shrub or small tree in contemporary or coastal landscapes. Fast-growing and low-maintenance once established.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other evergreens such as Pittosporum, Photinia, or Elaeagnus. Combines beautifully with flowering shrubs like Hydrangea or Rosa rugosa in mixed borders.
