Growing Conditions

Light:
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Foliage colour is brightest and most variegated in full sun; too much shade may cause loss of variegation.

Soil:
Grows well in a wide range of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy types, as long as they are well-drained. Tolerates slightly acidic to slightly alkaline conditions.

Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or exposed sites; wind-tolerant once established. Can tolerate urban pollution and salt spray, making it suitable for coastal locations.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once established. Requires more consistent moisture during the first year after planting.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or autumn for optimal root development before extreme heat or cold.

Spacing:
Space plants 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart to allow for spreading and to maintain good air circulation.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it requires only occasional watering during dry spells.

Fertilization:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring if growth appears slow or foliage pale. Not a heavy feeder.

Mulching:
Apply a 5 cm (2-inch) layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and control size. Can be trimmed more frequently to maintain as a formal hedge or groundcover. Responds well to shearing.

Propagation:
Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. Can also be layered naturally as branches root where they touch the ground.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Fresh green and white variegated foliage emerges; vigorous growth begins. Adds light and brightness to garden compositions.

Summer:
Dense foliage remains vibrant. Provides consistent structure and contrast in mixed borders or as a low hedge.

Autumn:
Leaves take on a slight pink or reddish tinge with cooler temperatures, adding seasonal colour interest.

Winter:
Evergreen in most climates; variegated foliage adds year-round interest. Can be used for winter structure and colour in the garden.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides shelter for small birds and insects. Not a major nectar source, but occasional small, inconspicuous flowers may attract pollinators.

Garden Use:
Versatile and low-maintenance choice for groundcover, slopes, edging, foundation plantings, and containers. Suitable for formal or informal gardens, including shade gardens and coastal settings.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with hostas, ferns, heucheras, hydrangeas, and ornamental grasses. Contrasts nicely with bold-leaved perennials and flowering shrubs.
