Pieris Forest Flame
Why Buy Me?
- Bright red foliage in early spring
- Masses of flowers
- Plant in acid soil or with ericaceous compost
Growing Conditions
-
Light:
Partial shade to full sun. Best leaf colour and flower production occur in partial shade; avoid harsh midday sun in hotter climates. -
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Dislikes chalky or alkaline conditions. Add organic matter such as leaf mould or peat for improved results. -
Exposure:
Sheltered position preferred. Protect from cold, drying winds and late frosts that may damage buds or new foliage. -
Drought Tolerance:
Low. Requires consistent moisture, especially in dry or exposed sites. Avoid allowing soil to dry out.
Cultivation & Care
-
Planting Time:
Spring or early autumn, when the ground is workable and mild. -
Spacing:
Space 1–1.5 metres (3–5 feet) apart, depending on the intended use and mature size. -
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during dry spells, especially during the first two years. Use an ericaceous fertilizer in early spring and again after flowering. -
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with bark, compost, or leaf mould to conserve moisture and improve acidity. Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove spent flower heads. -
Propagation:
Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer with bottom heat and rooting hormone.
Seasonal Interest
-
Spring:
Vivid red young foliage emerges, maturing through pink and cream to glossy green. Clusters of small, white, bell-shaped flowers bloom in mid to late spring. -
Summer:
Glossy green evergreen leaves form a dense, tidy shrub. -
Autumn:
Foliage remains vibrant. Occasional secondary flushes of colourful new growth may occur. -
Winter:
Evergreen. Maintains foliage and architectural presence year-round.
Wildlife & Garden Use
-
Wildlife:
Flowers attract early pollinators such as bees. Dense habit provides cover for small wildlife. -
Garden Use:
Perfect for woodland gardens, acid-loving borders, foundation planting, and large containers (with ericaceous compost). Excellent specimen shrub or part of a mixed shrub bed. -
Companion Plants:
Ideal with other acid-loving plants like Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias, Skimmia, and Ferns. Complements Heuchera and Hosta in shaded borders.
