Growing Conditions
Light:
Requires full sun for optimal growth, flower production, and fragrance. Needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. Thrives in poor to moderately fertile, alkaline to neutral soils. Avoid heavy clay or damp, water-retentive soil.
Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or exposed locations. Very tolerant of wind and coastal conditions.
Drought Tolerance:
High once established. Ideal for dry gardens, rockeries, and Mediterranean planting schemes.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring (after frost) or early autumn to allow roots to establish before temperature extremes.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Forms a compact mound about 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) high and wide.
Watering:
Water during the first growing season. Once established, only water during prolonged drought. Do not overwater.
Fertilization:
No regular feeding required. Overfeeding can lead to leggy growth and reduced scent. If necessary, apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring.
Mulching:
Use gravel or sand mulch to reflect light and improve drainage. Avoid moisture-retaining organic mulches around the crown.
Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain a compact shape. In late summer or early autumn, prune back by about one-third, avoiding cutting into woody stems.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer or softwood cuttings in spring. 'Hidcote' can also be grown from seed, but may not come true to type.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Silvery-grey, aromatic foliage emerges and forms neat mounds.
Summer:
Produces dense spikes of deep violet-purple flowers from June to August. Highly fragrant and long-lasting.
Autumn:
Faded flower spikes can remain for texture if unpruned. Foliage continues to offer structure and scent.
Winter:
Evergreen in most areas. Maintains compact form and foliage, especially when pruned regularly. Protect from excessive winter wet in heavy soils.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Excellent for pollinators—bees, butterflies, and hoverflies are especially attracted to the blooms.
Garden Use:
Ideal for low hedges, edging paths or borders, herb gardens, containers, rockeries, and Mediterranean planting schemes. Compact and tidy, it's perfect for formal and informal gardens alike.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with Salvia, Thyme, Santolina, Eryngium, Nepeta, Roses, and ornamental grasses. Beautiful in combination with silver-leaved or drought-tolerant perennials.
