Sambucus nigra Black Lace

Why Buy Me?

  • Distinct nearly black leaves
  • Masses of white/pink flowers
  • Easy to grow in any soil

Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Best leaf colour develops in full sun. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Exposure:
Hardy and adaptable. Can tolerate exposed sites, but performs best in a moderately sheltered position to protect from strong winds.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Drought-tolerant once established but thrives with regular moisture, especially during dry periods.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or autumn when the soil is moist and workable.

Spacing:
Allow 200–300 cm (6.5–10 feet) between plants depending on mature size and desired density.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water deeply during prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to encourage vigorous growth and flowering.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with compost or bark to conserve moisture and enrich soil. Prune in late winter or early spring—either lightly to maintain shape or hard to rejuvenate and encourage stronger foliage and flower production.

Propagation:
Propagate by hardwood cuttings in winter or softwood cuttings in early summer. Fast and easy to root.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Finely cut, deep purple-black foliage emerges. Pale pink, lemon-scented flowers appear in broad, flat-topped clusters (umbels), offering a striking contrast against the dark leaves.

Summer:
Flowers give way to glossy, blackish-red elderberries in late summer, attractive to wildlife and usable in jams, wine, and syrups (must be cooked before consumption).

Autumn:
Foliage may take on rich, bronze hues before dropping. Berries may persist if not harvested or eaten by birds.

Winter:
Deciduous. Bare, architectural branching structure remains, adding winter interest.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract pollinators including bees and butterflies. Berries are a valuable food source for birds. Dense foliage offers shelter and nesting sites for small wildlife.

Garden Use:
Excellent focal point for borders, wildlife gardens, or contemporary landscapes. Its dramatic foliage and floral contrast suit both modern and cottage-style gardens. Can also be grown as an informal hedge or in large containers.

Companion Plants:
Looks stunning paired with silver or chartreuse foliage plants like Artemisia or Hosta. Combine with pale pink or white flowering shrubs like Spiraea, Philadelphus, or Rosa rugosa for layered texture and contrast.
