Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in full sun for best flowering and compact growth. Tolerates light shade but flower production may decrease.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered to exposed positions. Hardy in most UK gardens, but may require some winter protection in colder regions.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. Water during prolonged dry spells for optimal health.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn for good establishment.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Mature height typically reaches 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) with a similar spread.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during the first growing season and in dry periods thereafter. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Cut back hard after flowering to maintain a compact shape.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in early summer or by division. Seed propagation is possible but less common for named cultivars.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New foliage emerges fresh and green.
Summer:
Produces striking pale to mid-blue tubular flowers with a slightly darker throat from early to late summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn in favourable conditions. Foliage remains tidy.
Winter:
Deciduous; dies back in winter but regenerates vigorously in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds (where available), supporting pollinator diversity.
Garden Use:
Perfect for borders, wildlife gardens, and containers. Adds cool blue tones and elegant flower spikes to summer planting schemes.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:

Lavender
