Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers full sun for best flowering, strong stems, and compact growth. Can tolerate partial shade, but may flower less and become leggy.
Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile to poor soil. Tolerates sandy, chalky, or gravelly soils. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rot.
Exposure:
Performs well in both sheltered and exposed locations. Fully hardy in the UK, tolerating frost and cold winters.
Drought Tolerance:
Excellent drought tolerance once established. Very suitable for dry gardens and low-maintenance borders.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow for good root development before extreme heat or frost.
Spacing:
Space plants approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Mature height typically reaches 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) with a similar spread.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water during dry spells in the first growing season. Once established, requires minimal watering. Fertilisation is rarely needed; a light compost mulch in spring is sufficient.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring if desired to enrich soil and retain moisture. Leave flower stems standing through winter for structural interest. Cut back old stems to ground level in early spring before new growth starts.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn, or by softwood cuttings in summer. Very easy to propagate and rejuvenate older plants.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fleshy, pale green leaves emerge, forming tidy, low-growing clumps.
Summer:
Large, flat-topped clusters of soft pink star-shaped flowers appear from late summer. Foliage remains attractive and succulent.
Autumn:
Flower colour deepens slightly to a richer pink. Provides long-lasting colour through early autumn. Leaves may take on subtle autumn tones.
Winter:
Foliage dies back. Dried flowerheads remain upright, providing winter interest and wildlife value.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. Dried seed-heads can provide shelter and food for birds and insects during winter.
Garden Use:
Ideal for sunny borders, rock gardens, gravel gardens, and wildlife-friendly planting. Excellent for mass planting, edging, or use in containers.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:
-
Rudbeckia
-
Echinacea
-
Nepeta
-
Salvia
-
Ornamental grasses (e.g. Stipa, Festuca)
Great for combining with other sun-loving, drought-tolerant perennials and grasses for a long-season, low-maintenance display.
