Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler parts of the UK. In sunnier or warmer areas, provide afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch and to maintain the rich, dark foliage colour.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows best in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid heavy, clay-based, or waterlogged soils to prevent crown and root rot.
Exposure:
Plant in a sheltered location, away from drying winds and strong midday sun. Hardy in most UK gardens, though a winter mulch may be helpful in colder or more exposed sites.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, but performs best with consistent moisture. Do not allow soil to dry out completely, especially during hot, dry spells.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting allows for full-season root development; autumn planting lets roots settle in before winter dormancy.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature plants grow to around 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) tall and 35–40 cm (14–16 inches) wide, forming a neat, dense clump.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce foliage colour intensity and lead to overly soft growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve soil moisture and reduce weeds. Keep mulch clear of the plant crown. Remove old or tattered leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Deadhead flowers to extend the bloom season and keep the plant tidy.
Propagation:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour. Can also be propagated via basal cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New leaves emerge in a deep, velvety black-purple, offering dramatic contrast against lighter foliage. The colour intensifies in cooler temperatures.
Summer:
Foliage remains glossy and near-black all season long. From late spring to mid-summer, small, creamy-white flowers appear on slender stems, adding subtle elegance.
Autumn:
Colour stays strong into autumn, adding dark contrast and depth to the border. The plant retains its compact, tidy form.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in most of the UK. May lose some leaves in colder areas but generally retains structure in milder regions. New growth emerges strongly in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators, enhancing ecological value in wildlife-friendly plantings.
Garden Use:
Excellent for borders, containers, shade gardens, woodland edges, or as a striking contrast in mixed plantings. Its rich, dark foliage provides structure, depth, and colour year-round.
