Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade, but is tolerant of full sun in cooler parts of the UK. In hotter or sunnier gardens, provide afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch and to preserve the rich leaf colour. Ideal for brightening semi-shaded spots.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows well in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid waterlogged or heavy soils, which can lead to root and crown rot.
Exposure:
Plant in a sheltered position, protected from cold, drying winds and intense direct sunlight. Hardy across most UK regions, though a winter mulch may help in colder or exposed sites.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. Regular watering during prolonged dry periods helps maintain vibrant foliage. Avoid letting the soil dry out entirely.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting supports robust root and foliage growth; autumn planting gives roots time to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature clumps typically reach 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) tall and 35–40 cm (14–16 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water consistently during the first season. Once established, water during dry spells. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid excessive fertiliser to retain the strong foliage colour.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the plant crown. Trim back tired or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to allow new growth to emerge. Deadhead faded flowers to prolong flowering and maintain a neat appearance.
Propagation:
Divide every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn. Can also be propagated via basal cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New growth emerges in rich tones of apricot, amber, and peach, giving a warm, glowing start to the season. Ruffled foliage adds texture and volume.
Summer:
Foliage holds its bronze-orange to cinnamon tones, often with pink or rose undersides. Small, creamy white flowers appear on slender stems from late spring into summer, attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Leaves often deepen in tone with cooler temperatures, creating a molten blend of red, orange, and gold, adding autumn richness to borders.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in most parts of the UK. May lose some foliage in harsher winters but typically regrows well in spring. Offers winter interest in milder or sheltered sites.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators, enhancing the ecological value of the garden.
Garden Use:
Excellent for borders, containers, woodland gardens, shady beds, or as underplanting for shrubs. Brings warmth and contrast to mixed planting schemes and brightens shaded areas.
