Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade, though it tolerates full sun in cooler regions. In warmer or sunnier parts of the UK, provide afternoon shade to protect foliage colour and prevent scorching. Ideal for brightening shaded or lightly dappled areas.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Thrives in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid poorly drained or compacted soils, which can lead to root and crown rot.
Exposure:
Grow in a sheltered position, protected from cold, drying winds and harsh afternoon sun. Hardy in most parts of the UK, though a winter mulch can help protect roots in exposed areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. For best results, water during dry spells—especially in containers or exposed locations.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting encourages full root establishment; autumn planting allows roots to settle before winter.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature plants typically reach 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) tall and 35–40 cm (14–16 inches) wide, forming dense mounds.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water in prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid overfeeding to maintain intense foliage colour.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the crown. Cut back tired or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to make way for fresh growth. Deadhead faded flowers to maintain appearance and extend blooming.
Propagation:
Divide every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn. Also propagates well from basal cuttings taken in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Emerging foliage is a vivid electric purple with slightly ruffled, glossy leaves. One of the brightest and most consistent purple Heucheras, even in spring.
Summer:
Foliage retains its deep purple hue throughout the hottest months. Short spikes of light pink flowers appear from late spring to mid-summer, offering contrast and attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Purple tones remain bold and vibrant, often deepening slightly with the cooler air. Offers striking contrast in mixed plantings well into autumn.
Winter:
Evergreen to semi-evergreen in milder regions. In colder areas, may lose some leaves but typically returns well in spring. Foliage can offer structure and winter interest in protected spots.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, contributing to a biodiverse garden.
Garden Use:
Excellent for borders, containers, shade gardens, woodland edges, and as year-round foliage interest in mixed plantings. Its intense purple colour adds bold contrast and drama to garden compositions.
Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with:
-
Hostas
-
Brunnera
-
Tiarella
-
Ferns
-
Pulmonaria
Pairs well with silver, lime-green, or blue foliage, and flowers in white, pink, or soft lavender tones. Works particularly well in containers or en-masse for colour impact.
