Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade to full shade, but can tolerate some morning sun. In cooler UK regions, it may accept more sun, though afternoon shade is recommended to protect the vivid lime foliage from scorching or fading.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Thrives in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged soils to prevent root and crown rot.
Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered position, away from cold, drying winds and direct, harsh sunlight. Hardy in most parts of the UK, though mulch may help protect in colder or more exposed sites.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, but foliage looks best with consistent moisture. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, especially in containers or hot weather.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting promotes strong growth through the season; autumn planting allows roots to settle before winter.
Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature plants typically grow to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) tall and 35–40 cm (14–16 inches) wide, forming a compact, mounding clump.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water in prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid high nitrogen feeds, which can cause lush growth at the expense of vibrant foliage colour.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the plant crown. Remove any old, damaged, or tired leaves in late winter or early spring to promote healthy new growth. Deadhead flowers to prolong the bloom period and maintain a tidy look.
Propagation:
Divide every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn. Can also be propagated via basal cuttings taken in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Foliage emerges in bright citrus-lime to chartreuse shades, providing an eye-catching burst of colour in shady spaces.
Summer:
Leaves hold their intense lime-green colour, with softly frilled edges adding texture. Tall, slender spikes of creamy white flowers appear from late spring into early summer, attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Foliage may deepen slightly in tone, offering continued contrast and interest through the autumn months.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild climates; may lose some foliage in colder areas but recovers well in spring. Maintains winter structure in sheltered or frost-free spots.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity in wildlife-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, containers, shade gardens, woodland plantings, and as a bright focal point in darker garden corners. Provides excellent year-round foliage interest and pairs well with deeper-toned or contrasting plants.
