    Growing Conditions

    Light:
Performs best in partial shade, but tolerates full sun in cooler parts of the UK. In warmer or sunnier areas, provide afternoon shade to prevent foliage from fading or scorching. Colour is most vivid with some exposure to light.

    Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows well in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils to prevent crown and root rot.

    Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered position, out of strong winds and intense sunlight. Hardy in most UK regions, though some winter mulch may help in very cold or exposed gardens.

    Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. For best results, water regularly during dry spells. Avoid allowing soil to dry out completely, especially during hot weather.

    Cultivation & Care

    Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting encourages a full season of root growth; autumn planting allows roots to establish before winter.

    Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature plants grow to approximately 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) tall and 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) wide, forming compact, tidy clumps.

    Watering & Fertilisation:
Water consistently during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding to maintain rich foliage colour and compact growth.

    Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the crown. Remove faded or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Deadhead flowers to prolong blooming and keep plants neat.

    Propagation:
Divide every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to maintain plant vigour. Can also be propagated by basal cuttings in summer.

    Seasonal Interest

    Spring:
Foliage emerges in brilliant shades of peach, apricot, and coral-red, creating a vivid display early in the season. Leaf colour intensifies with cool night temperatures.

    Summer:
Leaves mature to shades of plum and rose-orange, often with silvery highlights. Tall, slender stems carry small white flowers from late spring to mid-summer, adding lightness and attracting pollinators.

    Autumn:
Foliage colour often deepens with the season, turning rich burgundy-red tones, adding warm contrast to autumn plantings.

    Winter:
Semi-evergreen in most of the UK. May lose some foliage in colder regions but typically regrows well in spring. Provides winter structure and colour in sheltered positions.

    Wildlife & Garden Use

    Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and pollinators, making it a good addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

    Garden Use:
Perfect for borders, containers, woodland gardens, shade gardens, or as an accent plant in mixed perennial beds. Its fiery foliage colour provides stunning contrast and season-long interest.

    Companion Plants:
    Combines beautifully with:

    • Heuchera ‘Obsidian’, ‘Forever Purple’, or ‘Lime Marmalade’

    • Hostas

    • Tiarella

    • Ferns

    • Pulmonaria

    • Brunnera

Pairs well with foliage in silver, deep purple, lime green, and flowers in white, lavender, or soft pink for a dynamic colour contrast.
