Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. In cooler UK regions, it may handle more sun, but in warmer southern areas, provide afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch and maintain its rich foliage colour.
Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Prefers neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained soils to reduce the risk of crown and root rot.
Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered location, protected from cold drying winds and direct, intense sunlight. Hardy throughout most of the UK (generally RHS Hardiness H5), but may benefit from a mulch or light protection during harsh winters.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. Regular watering in dry spells is recommended, particularly during prolonged dry periods. Soil should be moist but not waterlogged.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting ensures a full growing season for root establishment; autumn planting helps roots settle before winter.
Spacing:
Allow 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) between plants. Mature plants reach approximately 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) high and 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly in the first season to establish strong roots. Once established, water during dry weather. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid excessive fertiliser as it can reduce foliage vibrancy.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch clear of the crown to avoid rot. Prune away old or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Remove faded flower stems to extend the flowering period and maintain a tidy habit.
Propagation:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to rejuvenate and propagate. Alternatively, take basal cuttings in summer for propagation.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Foliage emerges in rich, deep reddish-bronze tones, resembling cola with a cherry undertone—hence the name. Eye-catching from the outset.
Summer:
Small, rusty-red to dark pink flowers appear on wiry stems from late spring into early summer, complementing the foliage. Excellent for attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Foliage colour may intensify or soften with cooler temperatures, maintaining interest and forming an attractive mound.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in milder regions. May die back in colder areas but typically regrows well in spring. In sheltered spots, the foliage can provide winter structure and colour.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are nectar-rich and attract bees and other pollinators. Suitable for wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
Garden Use:
Perfect for borders, containers, shaded beds, woodland gardens, and as a striking underplanting for shrubs. Its year-round foliage colour offers contrast and textural interest in mixed plantings.
