Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. In cooler climates, it may take more sun, but in hotter regions, protect from intense afternoon sunlight to avoid leaf scorch and maintain vibrant foliage.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows well in neutral to slightly acidic soil. Good drainage is essential—avoid heavy or waterlogged soils to prevent crown and root rot.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered spots, away from drying winds and direct, harsh sunlight. Hardy in most UK gardens, though protection may be needed in extreme winters.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. Consistent moisture supports lush foliage, but soil should not be soggy.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting encourages full-season root development, while autumn planting allows roots to settle before winter.
Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature size is about 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) tall and 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water in dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce foliage colour intensity.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and reduce weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown. Remove old or tired leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Deadhead flowers to maintain a tidy appearance and prolong bloom time.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Divide every 3–4 years to rejuvenate the plant. Can also be propagated via basal cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh foliage emerges in striking champagne-gold tones, often with soft rose-pink highlights and silver veining. This variety is prized for its distinctive foliage colour from early spring onward.
Summer:
Foliage holds its vibrant colour throughout summer. Delicate blush-pink flowers appear on slender stems in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Cooler temperatures may bring a deepening or softening of the foliage tones, adding warm seasonal interest. The plant retains a neat, mounded shape.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild climates. In colder areas, it may lose foliage but will return strongly in spring. In sheltered spots, foliage can provide winter colour and structure.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators, making it a useful addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, shade gardens, containers, woodland gardens, or as an accent plant in mixed plantings. Its unique, colourful foliage provides contrast and texture year-round.
Companion Plants:
Looks beautiful alongside Hostas, Ferns, Brunnera, Tiarella, and Pulmonaria. Contrasts well with darker-leaved Heucheras or other shade-tolerant plants with blue, silver, or burgundy foliage. Pairs well with soft pinks, whites, and purples in flower borders.
