Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade, though it can tolerate morning sun. In cooler UK climates, it may thrive with more sun, but in hotter or more exposed locations, provide afternoon shade to preserve foliage colour and prevent leaf scorch.
Soil:
Prefers moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows well in neutral to slightly acidic soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils as they can cause crown and root rot.
Exposure:
Thrives in a sheltered position, protected from cold, drying winds. Hardy across most of the UK, though some winter protection may help in colder regions.
Drought Tolerance:
Once established, moderately drought-tolerant, though regular moisture helps maintain the best foliage colour. Soil should remain lightly moist, not soggy.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn. Spring planting supports full-season establishment; autumn allows roots to develop before winter dormancy.
Spacing:
Plant 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature plants reach around 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) tall and 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) wide, forming compact mounds.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water well during the first growing season. Once established, water in dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support growth and flowering. Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce foliage colour clarity.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the plant crown. Cut back any old or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Deadhead flowers regularly to extend blooming and keep a tidy appearance.
Propagation:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn. Propagation also possible via basal cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New foliage emerges in a vibrant, glowing cherry-red, creating strong early-season interest. The colour intensifies in cooler temperatures.
Summer:
Leaves deepen to a rich wine-red while maintaining brightness. Small, pale pink to white flowers appear on tall, slender stems from late spring to early autumn, attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Red foliage continues to provide seasonal impact, often contrasting beautifully with autumn tones in the garden.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild areas. In colder regions, it may lose some leaves but typically regrows well in spring. Offers useful winter structure in sheltered locations.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
The abundant flowers attract bees and other pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in wildlife-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for mixed borders, containers, woodland gardens, shade gardens, and as a colour accent in part-shaded areas. Its rich red foliage offers striking contrast and works well year-round.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with:
-
Hostas
-
Ferns
-
Tiarella
-
Brunnera
-
Pulmonaria
Excellent alongside plants with silver, purple, or lime-green foliage. Combines well with white, soft pink, or blue flowers for a pleasing colour contrast.
