Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. In cooler climates, it may perform well in full sun, but in hot regions, protect it from intense afternoon sunlight to avoid leaf scorch.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, humus-rich, fertile soil. Tolerates a range of soil types (loamy, sandy, or clay-based) provided they drain well. Best in slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Exposure:
Grow in a sheltered spot, especially from cold winter winds and hot midday sun. Hardy and resilient in most UK gardens, but will appreciate protection during extreme weather.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, but performs best with consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogged soils, which can cause root rot.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn to allow time for roots to establish before seasonal extremes. Spring planting is ideal for full-season growth.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Mature size is typically 45 cm (18 inches) tall and wide, forming a tidy, mounding clump.
Watering & Fertilization:
Keep soil evenly moist, especially in the first growing season. Water during prolonged dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth. Avoid overfeeding.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch lightly in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown. Deadhead flowers to tidy the plant and prolong blooming. Cut back tattered foliage in late winter or early spring to make way for fresh leaves.
Propagation:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to rejuvenate plants and increase stock. Can also be propagated from basal cuttings in late spring to summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New leaves emerge in rich, rosy-pink to raspberry tones, offering a bold splash of colour in spring borders.
Summer:
Foliage deepens to rose-pink with silver overtones, maintaining its vibrancy. Small, white to pinkish flower spikes rise above the foliage in early to mid-summer, attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
As temperatures cool, foliage may intensify in colour or take on plum or burgundy hues, offering excellent autumn interest.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in milder climates. In colder regions, foliage may die back but will return in spring. Can still provide some winter structure in protected spots.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attractive to bees and pollinators, especially when in bloom. The small bell-shaped flowers are nectar-rich and beneficial to early foragers.
Garden Use:
Perfect for borders, shade gardens, woodland gardens, containers, and as colourful ground cover. Its bold foliage makes it an excellent contrast plant, adding colour and texture even when not in bloom.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Hostas, Ferns, Astilbes, Brunnera, and Tiarella. Also contrasts well with silver or lime-foliaged plants and complements flowering companions like Campanula, Dicentra, and Pulmonaria
