Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and compact growth. Insufficient sunlight results in reduced blooming and lankier stems.
Soil:
Well-drained soil. Tolerates sandy, gravelly, or loamy soils, and thrives in poor, dry conditions. Avoid heavy clay or soggy sites. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5).
Exposure:
Ideal for sunny, open areas. Withstands heat, wind, and salt air, making it suitable for coastal gardens. Durable and resilient in both drought and cooler temperatures.
Drought Tolerance:
High. Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root rot or crown rot.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early fall to encourage root establishment before blooming or winter dormancy.
Spacing:
Space 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart. Reaches 25–35 cm (10–14 inches) in height and similar spread, forming tidy, mounding clumps.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first season to establish roots. Thereafter, water only during prolonged dry periods. Avoid excessive fertilizer; a spring compost mulch or balanced slow-release feed is sufficient.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply a light mulch in spring to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Deadhead regularly to extend flowering. Trim back in fall or early spring to remove spent growth and stimulate new shoots.
Propagation:
Can be propagated from seed, division, or basal cuttings. Note that seed-grown plants may not remain true to type. Often grown as a short-lived perennial or reseeding biennial.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Produces a dense mound of hairy, green to grey-green foliage. Offers early textural interest in mixed plantings.
Summer:
Blooms profusely from early summer through late September. Flowers are deep red to crimson with occasional yellow highlights, and prominent dark centres, adding rich, warm tones to borders.
Autumn:
Continued blooming may extend into early fall. Spent blooms can be left for seed interest or cut for tidiness and rebloom. Foliage remains neat and compact.
Winter:
Foliage dies back completely in colder climates. Mulch around the base in zones with severe winters to protect the crown. Cut back old stems before spring regrowth.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
A pollinator magnet—frequently visited by bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Not invasive and requires minimal care, making it ideal for eco-friendly landscapes.
Garden Use:
Excellent for dry, sunny borders, rock gardens, xeriscapes, and wildflower meadows. Also well-suited to containers and raised beds. Pairs beautifully with other drought-tolerant perennials.
Companion Plants:
Looks stunning alongside Coreopsis, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Nepeta, and Sedum. Also pairs well with ornamental grasses like Stipa or Festuca, and silver-foliaged companions such as Artemisia, Lavender, or Santolina.
