Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to full shade. Best leaf colour develops in full sun, especially in cooler climates. In hotter regions, partial shade is preferred to prevent leaf scorch. Adaptable to various light conditions but may spread more vigorously in partial shade.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soils including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid overly dry or waterlogged soils, though it adapts well to most average garden conditions.
Exposure:
Performs well in both sheltered and exposed locations. Hardy in USDA zones 4–9 (UK H6), making it suitable for a wide range of climates.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Fairly drought-tolerant once established, especially in shaded areas, but performs best with consistent moisture in hot, sunny locations.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and soil moisture is naturally higher. Can also be planted throughout the growing season if kept well-watered.
Spacing:
Space 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart. Grows 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) tall and spreads up to 60 cm (24 inches) or more over time through surface runners (stolons), forming a dense, ground-hugging mat.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water during dry periods, especially in sunny spots. Fertilization is usually unnecessary, but a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage lush growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch lightly in spring to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Shear or mow back flower spikes after blooming to tidy up the appearance and encourage denser foliage. Divide every 2–3 years in spring or autumn to prevent overcrowding and rejuvenate growth.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by division or by transplanting rooted runners. Can also be propagated from softwood cuttings or seed, although division is the most reliable method.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Deep burgundy-black, scalloped foliage emerges and spreads rapidly. Spikes of vibrant deep blue flowers appear in mid to late spring (April–May), rising just above the foliage and attracting pollinators.
Summer:
Foliage remains dark and glossy, adding dramatic contrast in shady or mixed plantings. Dense mat continues to suppress weeds effectively.
Autumn:
Colour persists through fall, maintaining interest even as other perennials fade.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild climates. In colder regions, foliage may die back slightly but usually remains present at the base. Offers winter ground cover and colour contrast.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Dense mats can provide habitat for insects and shelter for small wildlife. Deer- and rabbit-resistant due to aromatic foliage.
Garden Use:
Excellent groundcover for borders, underplanting shrubs and trees, edging paths, slopes, and shady areas where grass struggles. Also suitable for containers and small-space gardens. Great for erosion control and suppressing weeds.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Hostas, Ferns, Heuchera, Pulmonaria, Astilbe, and spring bulbs like Daffodils and Tulips. The dark foliage provides striking contrast to silver, lime green, or variegated plants.
