Low maintenance shrubs

Once established, specimen shrubs are generally low-maintenance, but a little regular care will keep them looking their best. Ensure they are watered well during dry spells, especially in their first couple of years. Apply a mulch of compost or bark in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Most benefit from an annual prune to maintain shape and encourage new growth—just be sure to check the best time to prune your specific variety. Feeding in spring with a slow-release fertiliser will also promote healthy foliage and flowering.

How to plant specimen shrubs

Getting your specimen shrub off to the best start is easy with a few simple steps:

  • Choose a location with suitable sun, shade, and soil conditions for your shrub.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
  • Loosen the soil in the bottom and sides of the hole to aid root penetration.
  • Place the shrub in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
  • Backfill with a mix of garden soil and compost, firming gently as you go.
  • Water thoroughly and mulch around the base to conserve moisture.
