Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for compact growth and prolific flowering. Tolerates light shade but may bloom less vigorously.
Soil:
Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers sandy or loamy soils and thrives in poor, rocky, or gritty substrates. Requires good drainage—especially in winter—to prevent root rot. Performs best in neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Exposure:
Best suited for open, sunny positions. Hardy. Tolerates wind and exposed conditions, including coastal locations.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate to high. Drought-tolerant once established, especially in well-drained soils. Performs well in dry gardens but benefits from occasional watering in prolonged dry spells.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before peak growing or freezing conditions.
Spacing:
Space 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart. Forms compact mounds, typically 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) tall and wide.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water only during extended dry periods. Avoid rich soils and heavy feeding—too much fertility may cause legginess. A light compost mulch in spring is sufficient.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch lightly with grit or compost in spring to suppress weeds and improve drainage. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering. Cut back old stems in late autumn or early spring.
Propagation:
Propagate by seed in spring or by division in early spring. Can self-seed in well-drained, sunny sites but is not invasive.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Forms tight, low rosettes of grassy, linear foliage. Neat and compact with early-season green texture.
Summer:
Produces striking, globe-shaped violet-blue flowers from June to August. Blooms are held above the foliage on slender stems, adding airy, spherical interest.
Autumn:
Some reblooming may occur if deadheaded. Foliage remains tidy as flowers fade. Seed heads may be left for subtle structure.
Winter:
Evergreen or semi-evergreen in mild winters. Foliage may persist as a ground-hugging rosette. Cut back any dead material in early spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Provides nectar through mid to late summer. Safe for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for rock gardens, gravel beds, alpine plantings, sunny borders, and containers. Excellent for dry, sunny slopes or crevices. Perfect for edging paths or planting among low grasses and Mediterranean herbs.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Sedum, Dianthus, Thymus, Campanula, Scabiosa, and other sun-loving, drought-tolerant perennials. Complements silver or grey-leaved plants like Stachys and Artemisia.
