  • Masses of flowers
  • Attractive to bees and pollinators
  • Adds height to a border

Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun to light shade. Performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and upright growth. In light shade, flowering may diminish and stems may require support.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Prefers fertile, humus-rich loam but tolerates a range of soil types including clay if drainage is sufficient. Performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid excessively dry or soggy conditions.

Exposure:
Grows well in both sheltered and exposed garden positions. Exceptionally hardy and handles cold, wind, and varied weather reliably.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Tolerates short dry periods once established but benefits from consistent moisture in hot or prolonged dry spells for best blooming performance.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn when conditions support root establishment.

Spacing:
Space plants 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Grows to approximately 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) in height when in flower, forming a clump about 45 cm (18 inches) wide.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods. Feed lightly with compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring; overfeeding can lead to legginess.

Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead to prolong flowering. Cut back to basal foliage in late autumn or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years to maintain vigour.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Division is straightforward and helps rejuvenate older clumps. May self-seed lightly, but seedlings may not come true to type.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New shoots emerge in fresh green clumps, giving early structure and lush foliage.

Summer:
Masses of soft lilac-pink starry flowers appear from early to midsummer (June–August), forming tall, airy, elegant spires above the foliage.

Autumn:
Flowering tapers off but spent blooms and seed heads continue to provide visual interest. Foliage may yellow slightly before dying back.

Winter:
Dormant through winter but old stems can be left to provide texture and catch frost. Cut back before new spring growth.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Seed heads may offer foraging opportunities for birds. Non-invasive and wildlife-friendly.

Garden Use:
Excellent for cottage gardens, perennial borders, and naturalistic plantings. Adds vertical interest and a soft, romantic touch. Can be grown in large containers with consistent moisture.

Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with Echinacea, Salvia, Veronicastrum, Geranium, Alchemilla, Nepeta, and ornamental grasses like Stipa or Calamagrostis. Complements both pastel and bold planting palettes.
