Why Buy Me?

  • A popular shrub
  • Long flowering period
  • Evergreen, compact shrub
  • Easy to grow, likes any soil

Growing Conditions

Light:
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes the most compact growth and best flowering, though it will tolerate some light shade.

Soil:
Grows well in moist but well-drained soil. Suitable for a variety of soils including sandy, loamy, and chalky types. Avoid heavy clay and waterlogged conditions.

Exposure:
Performs best in sheltered locations. Tolerates coastal conditions, but protect from cold, drying winds and severe frost, especially in inland or exposed sites.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires regular watering while establishing; once mature, it can tolerate short periods of drought but performs best with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when temperatures are mild and soil moisture levels are favourable for root establishment.

Spacing:
Space 60–75 cm (2–2.5 feet) apart when planting in groups or borders to allow for its naturally mounding shape and airflow.

Watering:
Water regularly in the first year. Once established, water during extended dry periods to support flowering and healthy foliage.

Fertilization:
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to encourage strong growth and a prolonged flowering period.

Mulching:
Apply mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Use compost, leaf mould, or bark, keeping mulch away from the base of stems.

Pruning:
Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as it may not regrow well.

Propagation:
Propagate from softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Easy to root under moist, warm conditions.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Glossy, evergreen foliage fills out into a tidy, compact shrub. Provides neat, year-round structure.

Summer:
Produces masses of small, white flowers on short spikes in early to mid-summer (typically June–August), contrasting beautifully with the deep green leaves.

Autumn:
Foliage remains attractive and tidy. Occasional late flowers may appear in mild autumns.

Winter:
Evergreen. Maintains foliage and rounded form throughout the colder months. In harsher climates, it may benefit from winter protection.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
The white flowers attract bees and other pollinators in summer. Provides shelter for insects and small wildlife year-round due to its dense foliage.

Garden Use:
Excellent for low hedging, borders, container gardening, and coastal or urban settings. Its compact size and long flowering period make it ideal for small gardens and front-of-border use.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Lavandula, Salvia, Erigeron, Heuchera, and compact ornamental grasses. Complements both colourful perennials and silver-foliaged plants like Stachys byzantina.
