Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flower production and colour vibrancy. Tolerates light shade but may produce fewer blooms in low-light areas.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged soils, which may cause poor growth and root problems.
Exposure:
Ideal for sunny, sheltered positions such as along fences, trellises, arbours, pergolas, or walls. Benefits from having the root zone shaded and cool—use mulch or plant low-growing companions to protect roots from excessive heat.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during dry spells and the first year after planting. Once established, tolerates occasional drought, though flowering and foliage will perform best with consistent moisture.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring after the last frost or in early autumn to allow roots to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.5 m (4–5 ft) apart when planting near other climbers or supports. Grows 3–5 m (10–16 ft) tall with appropriate support, ideal for medium to large vertical structures.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water thoroughly during dry periods. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. A second light feeding after the first flush of flowers can encourage prolonged blooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning Group 2:
Prune in late winter or early spring (February–March), removing dead, damaged, or weak growth. After the main flowering flush (midsummer), lightly trim to maintain shape and encourage further blooms.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or by layering. Vegetative propagation is recommended to maintain true flower form and colour.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New shoots emerge with fresh green leaves. Buds begin to form in late spring as temperatures warm.
Summer:
Blooms prolifically from midsummer through early autumn. Produces clusters of striking, tubular flowers—rose pink on the outside, with golden yellow interiors. Lightly fragrant and very attractive to pollinators.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage remains attractive, often turning yellow before dropping.
Winter:
Deciduous. Loses leaves in winter. Woody stems remain; prune before new growth in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to hummingbirds (in suitable climates), butterflies, and bees due to its vibrant, nectar-rich flowers. Foliage provides shelter for insects and small garden wildlife in summer.
Garden Use:
Excellent for adding vivid colour and vertical interest on trellises, arbours, fences, and obelisks. Perfect for cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, or informal garden settings. Can also be grown through open shrubs or small trees for a natural look.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with blue and purple-flowering perennials like Salvia, Nepeta, Lavender, and Geranium. Complements Clematis varieties with contrasting bloom times or lighter colours. Works well alongside ornamental grasses and climbing roses.
