Why Buy Me?

  • Fast growing
  • Ideal for covering walls or pergolas
  • Long flowering period

Growing Conditions

Light:
Thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade. For best flowering and fastest growth, plant in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Soil:
Adaptable to a wide range of soils, including poor or dry soils. Prefers moist, well-drained conditions but will tolerate sandy, loamy, or even clay soils. pH tolerant from slightly acidic to alkaline.

Exposure:
Performs well in exposed or sheltered positions. Excellent for quickly covering unsightly structures, fences, or walls. Not suited for small gardens due to its vigorous and invasive growth habit.

Drought Tolerance:
High once established. Can thrive in dry soils and withstand summer droughts, though occasional watering during extreme dry periods supports more vigorous growth and flowering.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or autumn. Avoid planting near delicate structures or small trees, as it can overwhelm them quickly.

Spacing:
Allow at least 3–4 metres (10–13 feet) between this and other climbers or structures. Grows exceptionally fast and can reach 9–12 metres (30–40 feet) or more in a single season.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first year. Once established, it rarely needs supplemental watering. It generally does not require fertilization, especially in rich soils. Overfeeding may encourage excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowering.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to suppress weeds and conserve moisture, though this is often unnecessary due to its vigorous growth.
Prune hard in late winter or early spring (February–March) to control size and shape. It flowers on the current year’s growth, so pruning encourages a more floriferous display. Regular trimming throughout the season may be necessary to manage spread.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or by division in spring. Can also self-seed in ideal conditions, so monitor to prevent unwanted spread.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Rapid leaf growth begins early. Dense green foliage quickly forms, covering structures or supports.

Summer:
From late summer into early autumn (July–September), produces masses of small, creamy-white to pink-tinged flowers in loose sprays. Though each flower is small, the sheer quantity creates a dramatic, cloud-like effect.

Autumn:
Flowers continue into early autumn. Foliage may remain green until the first frosts, then turns yellow before dropping.

Winter:
Deciduous. Stems become bare and woody in winter. Prune hard before spring growth resumes.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators. Dense growth provides shelter for birds and insects, though the aggressive habit can crowd out native species if not controlled.

Garden Use:
Ideal for rapid screening of unsightly areas, industrial fencing, large trellises, or over old sheds and garages. Useful for erosion control on banks and steep slopes. Not recommended for small gardens or near sensitive plants due to its extremely fast and invasive growth. Can be used decoratively in very large or wild gardens where space is not limited.

Companion Plants:
Rarely planted with companions due to its dominance. Best grown alone in an area where it won’t compete with less vigorous plants
