Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily but will tolerate more shade than many other climbers. In shadier spots, flowering may be reduced, but foliage remains lush.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid waterlogged or compacted soils which may lead to root rot or reduced growth.
Exposure:
Suitable for sheltered to semi-exposed positions. Ideal for growing along fences, trellises, or up walls. Will climb trees or scramble over large shrubs. Protect from strong, drying winds that can damage foliage and young shoots.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires consistent watering during establishment and dry periods. Once mature, can tolerate short dry spells, though regular moisture promotes better flowering and foliage quality.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or autumn when the soil is workable and not frozen. Autumn planting allows roots to settle before the growing season begins.
Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) apart when planting in groups or near other climbers. Will grow 4.5–6 m (15–20 ft) tall or more when mature, given proper support.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly, especially during the first two years and in prolonged dry spells. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer, and again in midsummer if desired to support flowering and foliage.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring with compost or leaf mould to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.
Pruning Group 2:
Prune after flowering in late summer to control size and shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or congested growth. Older plants can be cut back harder in late winter to rejuvenate.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or by layering in spring or autumn. Seeds can be used but may not come true to form and take longer to establish.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Evergreen leaves remain through winter; new growth begins to flush out, and flower buds may start to appear.
Summer:
Produces clusters of tubular, dark red to purplish flowers with yellow interiors from late spring through summer. These are lightly fragrant and attract pollinators.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage remains glossy and green, adding texture and coverage in the garden.
Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates, retaining dark green, leathery leaves year-round. In colder areas, may be semi-evergreen or lose leaves partially but regrows quickly in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators with its tubular flowers. Dense evergreen foliage offers year-round shelter for birds and beneficial insects.
Garden Use:
Excellent for year-round cover on walls, fences, trellises, arches, and pergolas. Also suitable for scrambling through large shrubs or trees. Ideal in wildlife gardens, informal borders, or for creating privacy screens. Combines beautifully with spring- or summer-flowering clematis for layered interest.
