Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Requires a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering and colour intensity. Benefits from some afternoon shade in hot climates to prevent fading and overheating.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soils, which may lead to root rot.
Exposure:
Performs well in borders, containers, or trained up trellises, fences, obelisks, or small pergolas. Prefers a sheltered position. Keep the root zone cool and shaded with mulch or groundcover plants.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during establishment and dry periods. Benefits from consistent moisture throughout the growing and blooming season.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring after the last frost or in early autumn to allow roots to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Space 1–1.2 m (3–4 ft) apart or as needed for structure coverage. Grows to 1.8–2.5 m (6–8 ft) tall with support, ideal for smaller gardens and containers.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly, especially during dry periods and when in flower. Feed with a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush of flowers to encourage repeat blooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning group 2:
-
Light prune in late winter or early spring (February–March), removing dead or weak stems and cutting back to a pair of strong buds.
-
After the first flush (May–June), lightly trim to encourage a second round of blooms in late summer.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in late spring to early summer. Vegetative propagation is required to maintain true flower form and colour.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Early growth appears with green foliage. First flush of double flowers begins in late spring (May–June).
Summer:
Often reblooms in late summer (August–September). Features large, double, rich violet-blue flowers with silvery central petaloid structures, giving a multi-layered, almost dahlia-like appearance. Flowers are about 10–15 cm across.
Autumn:
Late flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage turns yellow before falling.
Winter:
Deciduous. Plant goes dormant. Prune in late winter before new growth begins.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and pollinators, particularly in spring and summer. Dense foliage offers temporary shelter to insects.
Garden Use:
A stunning feature for trellises, patio containers, small pergolas, obelisks, and narrow spaces. Ideal for cottage gardens, courtyard gardens, and sheltered urban spaces. Great for adding a dramatic vertical accent.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with pale or silver-leaved plants and clematis with contrasting bloom times (e.g., Miss Bateman, Guernsey Cream). Complements perennials like Lavandula, Geranium, Salvia, and Campanula. Excellent with climbing roses or against a light-coloured wall for maximum contrast.
