Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering. Performs well in partial shade and is more tolerant of less sun than many other clematis. Avoid deep shade, which reduces bloom quantity.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy, poorly drained soils which may lead to root rot.
Exposure:
Best grown in sunny to lightly shaded borders, against walls, fences, pergolas, or over arches. Roots should be shaded and cool — use mulch or low-growing plants to protect the root zone.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires regular watering, particularly during the first growing season and dry summer periods. Once established, it can tolerate occasional drought but flowers better with consistent moisture.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when soil is moist and workable. Autumn planting allows roots to settle in before winter.
Spacing:
Allow 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) between plants or other climbers. Will reach 2.5–4 m (8–13 ft) in height when supported.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water deeply during dry spells, especially while flowering. Feed with a balanced or high-potash fertilizer in spring and again after the first flush of blooms to encourage extended flowering.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pruning group 3:
-
Prune back hard in late winter or early spring (February–March), cutting stems to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) above ground.
-
This encourages strong new growth and heavy flowering on current season’s shoots.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in late spring to summer, or by layering. Named cultivars like Jackmanii Superba should be propagated vegetatively to retain true characteristics.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New leafy growth begins in spring. Plants quickly establish vertical growth once temperatures rise.
Summer:
Large, velvety, deep purple flowers (10–15 cm across) with golden stamens bloom profusely from mid to late summer (July–September). A striking and reliable performer.
Autumn:
Flowering often continues into early autumn with deadheading. Leaves may yellow and fall by late autumn.
Winter:
Deciduous. Dies back completely and remains dormant over winter. Prune to the ground in late winter for best regrowth.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attractive to bees and other pollinators. Provides some vertical cover and shelter for small garden wildlife during the growing season.
Garden Use:
Versatile and vigorous climber ideal for trellises, fences, arches, pergolas, and obelisks. Perfect for cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and traditional mixed borders. Can also be grown through small trees or shrubs.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with climbing roses or other clematis with different bloom times or colours (e.g., Guernsey Cream, Huldine). Complements perennials like Echinacea, Geranium, Nepeta, and Salvia. Its dark purple flowers stand out beautifully against lighter or silver foliage.
