Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimum flowering. Tolerates partial shade, especially in hot climates, though flowering may be reduced in deep shade.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils to prevent root rot.
Exposure:
Ideal for warm, sheltered positions such as south- or west-facing walls, fences, pergolas, arches, or trellises. Can be grown as a climber or groundcover. Suitable for large containers in courtyards or patios. Needs support to climb—twines around structures rather than clinging.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, it is reasonably drought-tolerant but flowers best with regular watering during dry spells.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn while the soil is still warm. Spring planting gives roots time to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.5 m (4–5 ft) apart when planting against structures. Grows 3–6 m (10–20 ft) tall and wide when trained and supported.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the growing season, especially during prolonged dry periods. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. In containers, use liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning Group 11:
Prune after flowering (late summer) to shape, control growth, and remove dead or tangled stems. Can be pruned more heavily in early spring if rejuvenation is needed.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or layering in spring or early autumn. Easy to propagate vegetatively.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New glossy green foliage emerges; flower buds begin to form. In warm climates, flowering may begin late spring.
Summer:
Masses of highly fragrant, star-shaped white flowers bloom from mid to late summer (June–August). The scent is intense and jasmine-like, especially in the evening.
Autumn:
Some flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage may take on bronze or reddish tints in cooler temperatures.
Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates. In colder regions, leaves may bronze or drop partially, but plants typically recover in spring. Provide winter protection below -10°C (14°F).
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Dense foliage offers nesting sites and cover for insects and small birds.
Garden Use:
A highly ornamental climber or groundcover for walls, fences, trellises, pergolas, or containers. Excellent for fragrant gardens, Mediterranean-style gardens, courtyards, and urban spaces. Also suitable for topiary frames or espalier.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with other climbers like Clematis or Rosa (climbing roses). Underplant with lavender, salvia, or Heuchera to contrast the glossy foliage. Complements evergreen shrubs and can be used alongside other scented plants like Daphne, Lonicera, or Osmanthus.
