Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. In cooler UK areas, it may handle more light, but protect from hot afternoon sun to prevent fading or scorching of the vivid foliage. Ideal for dappled shade or light woodland settings.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows well in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Avoid poorly drained or heavy clay soils, as excessive moisture can lead to crown and root rot.
Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered position, away from cold winds and harsh sunlight. Hardy in most parts of the UK, but may need winter mulch or protection in colder areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, though regular moisture is beneficial for healthy foliage. Avoid letting soil dry out completely for extended periods.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting promotes full root development before summer growth. Autumn planting allows roots to settle before cold weather arrives.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature size is typically around 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) high and 30–35 cm (12–14 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly in the first season. Once established, water during dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers, which may reduce foliage colour intensity.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the plant’s crown. Remove old or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to tidy and stimulate new growth. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and maintain a clean appearance.
Propagation:
Divide mature plants every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour and colour. Can also be propagated via basal cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Emerging leaves are a brilliant chartreuse-yellow, overlaid with deep crimson-red veining—striking and vibrant, creating a glowing effect in shaded areas.
Summer:
Foliage maintains its bold colouring, especially in cooler or partially shaded spots. Small, creamy-white flowers appear on slender stems from late spring to early summer, adding delicate contrast.
Autumn:
The red veining may intensify as temperatures drop, providing rich autumnal tones. Foliage retains its form and colour well into autumn.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild climates; may die back in colder regions but re-emerges strongly in spring. Offers some winter interest in sheltered, frost-free areas.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are a good nectar source for bees and pollinators, making it a valuable addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
Garden Use:
Excellent for borders, containers, shade gardens, woodland settings, or as a groundcover beneath shrubs. Provides bold colour contrast and a luminous quality in darker garden areas.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with:
-
Hostas
-
Brunnera
-
Tiarella
-
Pulmonaria
-
Heucherella
Contrasts nicely with deep purple or blue foliage and plants with soft pink, cream, or lavender blooms. Ideal for pairing with plants that appreciate similar light and moisture conditions.
