Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best colour and flowering. In warmer regions, some afternoon shade helps prevent flower fading. Performs well on east- or west-facing walls.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy, wet, or poorly drained soils which can lead to root rot.
Exposure:
Well-suited to walls, fences, obelisks, trellises, and pergolas. A compact climber ideal for smaller gardens or containers. Keep the root zone cool and shaded using mulch or low-growing plants.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires regular watering during dry spells and especially while establishing. Benefits from consistent moisture during the flowering season.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring after the last frost, or in early autumn to allow root establishment before winter.
Spacing:
Allow 1–1.2 m (3–4 ft) between plants or other climbers. Reaches a height of 1.8–2.5 m (6–8 ft) with support, making it suitable for smaller vertical structures.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water deeply during dry periods. Apply a balanced or high-potash fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush of flowers to promote reblooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning group 2:
-
Lightly prune in late winter or early spring (February–March), removing weak or dead stems and trimming back to a healthy pair of buds.
-
After the first flush of blooms (May–June), prune lightly again to encourage a second flowering in late summer.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in late spring to summer. As a named cultivar, propagate vegetatively to maintain true characteristics.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Foliage emerges early. First flush of large, striking bi-colour flowers appears in late spring (May–June).
Summer:
Often reblooms in late summer (August–September). Flowers are around 10–15 cm wide, deep violet-blue with a contrasting bright crimson-red central bar and creamy stamens — one of the most vivid and dramatic colour contrasts in clematis.
Autumn:
Second bloom may extend into early autumn. Leaves gradually yellow and drop as the plant enters dormancy.
Winter:
Deciduous. Bare stems persist through winter. Prune before new growth starts in late winter/early spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Dense summer growth offers some shelter for insects.
Garden Use:
Excellent for trellises, small fences, obelisks, pergolas, or containers. A great choice for patios, cottage gardens, or front garden borders where its vivid flowers can be appreciated up close.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with climbing roses or pale-flowering clematis like Guernsey Cream or Miss Bateman. Complements perennials such as Salvia, Geranium, Nepeta, or Campanula. The vivid two-tone flowers look dramatic against green foliage or light-coloured walls.
