Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, though it will tolerate light shade, especially in hotter regions where afternoon shade helps protect flowers and foliage.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained conditions, which can cause root problems.
Exposure:
Best grown on walls, fences, pergolas, or scrambling through large trees or shrubs. Thrives in sheltered or exposed positions. Ensure roots are shaded and cool — mulch at the base or plant groundcovers.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate to high once established. Requires regular watering in the first growing season. Tolerates short dry periods well after becoming established.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when the soil is workable. Autumn planting allows the root system to develop over winter.
Spacing:
Space 2–3 m (6–10 ft) apart for full coverage. This is a vigorous climber that can reach 6–8 m (20–26 ft) high, so ensure it has adequate space and support.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support vigorous growth and flowering.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning group 1:
-
Prune immediately after flowering in late spring or early summer if necessary to control size or shape.
-
Minimal pruning is needed otherwise, as it flowers on old wood.
Propagation:
Propagate by layering or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. As a named cultivar, vegetative propagation is needed to maintain its unique double-flower form.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Early-season foliage appears bronze or purple-tinged before turning mid-green. A mass of small, rich pink, double flowers with a star-like appearance bloom from April to May.
Summer:
Foliage provides a lush, dense backdrop once flowering ends. This clematis is largely a spring bloomer, but the foliage maintains visual interest through summer.
Autumn:
Leaves begin to fade to yellow or bronze. Plant enters dormancy by late autumn.
Winter:
Deciduous. Bare stems persist through winter, forming a woody structure.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract early pollinators such as bees. The dense growth habit may offer nesting and cover for birds and insects.
Garden Use:
A stunning choice for covering large structures such as pergolas, fences, arches, and even mature trees. Excellent for naturalistic gardens, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, or large boundaries where rapid coverage is desired.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with spring bulbs (e.g., Tulips, Daffodils), early-flowering shrubs, or other clematis with contrasting flower colours. The rich pink flowers look particularly striking against dark foliage or brick walls.
