Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering and a strong, upright habit. Will tolerate very light shade, but flowering may be reduced.
Soil:
Well-drained soil is essential. Prefers moderately fertile, sandy or loamy soils and thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. Does not perform well in heavy, poorly drained soils, especially in winter.
Exposure:
Best in a sheltered, sunny position. Although reasonably hardy, it benefits from protection against cold winds and excessive winter wet, which can reduce longevity.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate to high. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and performs well in drier borders, though occasional watering during prolonged dry spells improves flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn, ideally in well-drained soil to allow good establishment before extreme weather.
Spacing:
Space plants 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Typically grows 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) tall with a spread of about 45–60 cm (18–24 inches), forming a loose, airy clump.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, water sparingly except during extended dry periods. Avoid rich feeding—light application of compost in spring is sufficient, as overly fertile soil can lead to floppy growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply a light mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pinching back early growth in late spring can encourage bushier plants and reduce the need for staking. Deadheading prolongs flowering. Cut back stems after flowering or leave structure over winter and cut down in early spring.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring, though it may be short-lived and divisions should be taken regularly to maintain vigour. Can also be propagated by basal cuttings in spring.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Produces low mounds of grey-green foliage, providing a neat and tidy base.
Summer:
Begins flowering early compared to many asters, often from early to midsummer (June–July), with lavender-blue daisy-like flowers and golden centres.
Autumn:
Continues flowering well into autumn (often until October), providing long-lasting colour when many other perennials are fading.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild climates, though often dies back in colder or wetter conditions. Good drainage is key to overwinter survival.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators over a long season. A valuable nectar source due to its extended flowering period.
Garden Use:
Excellent for sunny borders, gravel gardens, and drought-tolerant planting schemes. Its long flowering season and airy habit make it ideal for weaving through mixed perennial plantings.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with plants that enjoy similar dry, sunny conditions such as Echinacea, Coreopsis, Gaura, Salvia, Nepeta, and ornamental grasses like Stipa. Works especially well in informal and naturalistic designs.
