Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to light shade. Performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and upright growth. In light shade, flowering may diminish and stems may require support.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Prefers fertile, humus-rich loam but tolerates a range of soil types including clay if drainage is sufficient. Performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid excessively dry or waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Grows well in both sheltered and exposed garden positions. Exceptionally hardy and handles cold, wind, and varied weather reliably.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Tolerates short dry periods once established but benefits from consistent moisture during hot or prolonged dry spells for best flowering performance.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn when soil conditions support strong root establishment.
Spacing:
Space plants 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Typically grows to around 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) tall, forming a clump approximately 45 cm (18 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during extended dry periods. Apply a light mulch of compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring; excessive feeding may cause floppy growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a longer flowering period. Cut back stems to the base in late autumn or early spring. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Division is simple and helps rejuvenate older plants. Can also be grown from basal cuttings in spring. Does not typically self-seed aggressively.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green basal foliage emerges, forming neat clumps that provide early-season structure.
Summer:
Produces abundant soft lilac-pink, semi-double, daisy-like flowers with yellow centres from midsummer to early autumn (July–September). Flowers are carried on upright stems, creating a soft, airy display.
Autumn:
Continues flowering into early autumn. Seed heads and fading blooms can add texture if left in place. Foliage may begin to yellow as temperatures drop.
Winter:
Dies back to the ground. Remaining stems can be left for winter interest and wildlife habitat, then cleared before new growth begins in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Provides a valuable late-season nectar source. Non-invasive and beneficial for biodiversity.
Garden Use:
Ideal for cottage gardens, herbaceous borders, and wildlife-friendly plantings. Its compact habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens and container growing. Adds soft colour and structure without overwhelming neighbouring plants.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Echinacea, Salvia, Sedum, Rudbeckia, Nepeta, and ornamental grasses such as Stipa and Deschampsia. Works beautifully in both pastel-themed and vibrant planting schemes.
