Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers full sun for best growth and flowering. Can tolerate light shade but may become less vigorous.
Soil:
Thrives in well-drained soil, preferring moderately fertile, neutral to alkaline soils. Tolerates poor, dry soils but dislikes heavy, waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered to exposed locations. Hardy across much of the UK, tolerating frost and cold winters.
Drought Tolerance:
Highly drought-tolerant once established. Performs well in dry conditions.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or autumn.
Spacing:
Space plants approximately 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) apart. Mature height typically reaches 120–150 cm (4–5 feet) tall with a spread of 60–90 cm.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, requires minimal watering. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Cut back old foliage to about 10 cm above ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in early spring or by seed sown in spring.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green shoots emerge.
Summer:
Produces tall, elegant plumes of feathery, silvery-golden flower heads from mid to late summer. Flower heads persist into autumn and winter, adding architectural interest.
Autumn:
Flower plumes gradually fade but remain attractive into winter.
Winter:
Evergreen or semi-evergreen in mild climates; foliage dies back in colder areas.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Provides shelter for insects and small wildlife. Flower plumes may catch frost and snow, adding seasonal texture.
Garden Use:
Ideal for ornamental grass borders, prairie-style gardens, and naturalistic planting schemes. Adds height, movement, and architectural form to mixed borders and containers.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:
-
Echinacea
-
Rudbeckia
-
Salvia
-
Perovskia
-
Alliums
Combines well with bold, structural perennials and flowering plants for dynamic garden designs.
