Growing Conditions

Light:
Partial shade to full shade. Best foliage colour develops in bright shade or dappled sunlight. Tolerates full sun in cooler climates if soil is consistently moist but may scorch in hot, dry sun.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil rich in organic matter. Grows well in slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged soils.

Exposure:
Ideal for sheltered sites in woodland gardens, borders, or shaded containers. Hardy in USDA zones 5–9 (UK H5), tolerating mild frost but benefits from protection in severe winters.

Drought Tolerance:
Low to moderate. Requires consistent moisture, especially in sunny areas. More drought-tolerant in shade once established, but best with regular watering.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when the soil is moist and temperatures are mild. This allows roots to establish before hot or freezing weather.

Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Forms compact, arching clumps about 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) tall and wide, slowly spreading to form groundcover.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first season. Once established, water as needed to maintain moist (not soggy) soil. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or apply compost as a mulch.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch lightly in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. In late winter or early spring, trim back old or damaged foliage to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh new growth.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Divide clumps every few years to rejuvenate growth and manage spread. Can also be grown from seed, but division is faster and more reliable.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Bright, variegated foliage emerges fresh and vibrant—creamy-yellow central stripes edged in dark green.

Summer:
Maintains striking foliage throughout summer, offering colour and texture in shady areas. Occasionally produces inconspicuous brown flower spikes.

Autumn:
Continues to provide foliage colour and interest. A great contrast to autumn-toned perennials and grasses.

Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates, maintaining colour and form year-round. In colder regions, may need light protection or clean-up in early spring if foliage becomes damaged.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides cover and habitat for small garden insects. Not a major pollinator plant but beneficial in woodland and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Garden Use:
Ideal for shade gardens, woodland borders, edging paths, underplanting shrubs, containers, and rock gardens. Excellent for adding year-round texture, contrast, and colour to darker garden corners.

Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with Hostas, Ferns, Heucheras, Brunnera, Pulmonaria, Tiarella, Epimedium, and other shade-tolerant plants. Foliage contrasts well with bold or dark-coloured leaves and spring-flowering bulbs.
