Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in full sun for best flowering and compact growth. Can tolerate light shade but flowering may be reduced.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered to exposed positions. Hardy in most UK gardens, but may benefit from some winter protection in colder areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. Water during prolonged dry spells to maintain vigour.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn for best establishment.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Mature height is typically 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) tall with a spread of about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches).
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote flowering.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Cut back hard after flowering to maintain compact shape.
Propagation:
Propagate by cuttings in late spring to early summer or by division. Seed propagation is possible but less common for named cultivars.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New shoots emerge with fresh green foliage.
Summer:
Produces abundant deep garnet-red tubular flowers from early summer through to late summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds (in suitable climates).
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn in favourable conditions. Foliage remains tidy and attractive.
Winter:
Deciduous; dies back in winter but crowns remain hardy and re-sprout in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it valuable for pollinator-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and container planting. Its vivid flower colour adds strong summer interest.
