Growing Conditions
Light:
Requires full sun for best flowering and compact growth. Thrives in a warm, sunny, sheltered position.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates poor, sandy, or chalky soils but does not perform well in heavy, waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered or moderately exposed site. Protection from strong winds is recommended to prevent damage to tall stems.
Drought Tolerance:
Good once established. Suitable for dry, sunny borders and coastal gardens.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when soil is warm and workable.
Spacing:
Allow 1.2–1.5 metres (4–5 feet) between plants. Typically reaches around 1.5–2 metres (5–6.5 feet) in height and spread.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods only.
Fertilization:
Low feeding requirements. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring if needed, but avoid excessive feeding which can lead to leggy growth.
Mulching:
Apply mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, especially while plants establish.
Pruning:
Cut back hard in early spring (March–April) to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) above ground to encourage strong new growth and abundant flowering.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Seed propagation is possible but may not come true to cultivar.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green, lobed foliage emerges and plants quickly put on vigorous growth.
Summer:
Produces a profusion of rich burgundy-red flowers with darker centres from June to September, creating a bold display.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage begins to fade with cooler temperatures.
Winter:
Deciduous. Top growth may die back in colder areas; protect roots with mulch in harsh winters.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for cottage gardens, mixed borders, and sunny, sheltered spots. Provides strong colour contrast and height in summer planting schemes.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with lavender, salvia, nepeta, achillea, gaura, and ornamental grasses for a vibrant, sun-loving display.
