Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Best flowering and compact growth occur in full sun. In cooler climates, choose a sunnier location for increased flower production.
Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerant of a variety of soils including sandy, loamy, or chalky types. Avoid heavy, poorly drained, or waterlogged soils.
Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or moderately exposed positions. Suitable for coastal gardens due to tolerance of salty winds. Protect from cold, drying winds and hard frost in colder regions.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during the first year and during extended dry spells. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but prefers occasional watering in hot, dry conditions.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish in mild conditions.
Spacing:
Space 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart when mass planting or using in borders. Allow room for its natural, rounded growth habit.
Watering:
Keep evenly moist during establishment. Water deeply during drought conditions but allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Fertilization:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce flowering.
Mulching:
Mulch annually in spring with compost or bark to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate roots.
Pruning:
Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as it may not regenerate well.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Evergreen foliage begins active growth. Glossy green leaves form a tidy, bushy mound.
Summer:
Rich green foliage remains dense. Flowers begin developing toward late summer.
Autumn:
Produces spikes of soft lavender to pale lilac flowers from late summer into early autumn (typically August–October), adding late-season colour.
Winter:
Evergreen. Foliage remains vibrant, maintaining structural interest through the winter months. May show slight purplish tints in cold weather.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, particularly valuable as a nectar source in late summer and early autumn.
Garden Use:
Ideal for mixed borders, coastal gardens, rockeries, and containers. Suitable for small gardens due to its compact size. Often used for year-round color and texture in foundation plantings and low hedges.
Companion Plants:
Works well alongside other Hebes, Lavandula, Salvia, Sedum, and Heuchera. Combines beautifully with ornamental grasses and silver-leaved plants like Stachys byzantina or Artemisia
