Parthenocissus Quinquefolia

Why Buy Me?

  • Fantastic Autumn foliage
  • Leaves change colour with the seasons

Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun to full shade. Performs best in full sun to partial shade, where it develops the most vibrant autumn colour. Tolerates deep shade, though with less intense foliage colour and slower growth.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Tolerates acidic to neutral pH. Avoid very dry, compacted, or waterlogged sites for optimal health.

Exposure:
Excellent for covering large walls, fences, pergolas, or trellises. Can also be used as ground cover for banks and slopes. Self-clinging with adhesive pads on tendrils—requires no support for climbing surfaces like masonry or wood. Very wind-tolerant once established.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering during extended dry periods promotes healthier foliage and stronger growth.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when soil is workable and mild temperatures allow roots to establish before extreme weather.

Spacing:
Space 2–3 m (6–10 ft) apart if planting multiple vines. Can grow 15–20 m (50–65 ft) or more when left unpruned, making it ideal for large-scale coverage.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first 1–2 years to help establishment. Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer if growth is weak or soil is poor—generally low-maintenance once mature.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning Group 11:
Prune in late winter or early spring to control size, shape, and spread. Can be pruned hard if overgrown—it responds well to rejuvenation pruning. Remove any shoots growing into unwanted areas (e.g., gutters or under roof tiles) during the growing season.

Propagation:
Propagate by hardwood cuttings in winter, softwood cuttings in late spring, or layering. Roots easily and grows quickly once established.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New shoots emerge with fresh green foliage. Fast-growing and fills vertical or horizontal space quickly.

Summer:
Lush green foliage provides dense cover and cooling shade. Inconspicuous green flowers may appear in early summer, followed by small blue-black berries (if pollinated).

Autumn:
Spectacular red, crimson, and burgundy autumn foliage. One of the best climbers for autumn colour, especially in sunny sites. Berries attract birds.

Winter:
Deciduous. Loses leaves, leaving a framework of woody stems on supports. Bare stems can be pruned or left for winter structure.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers provide nectar for pollinators, while berries are a food source for birds. Dense summer foliage offers nesting and shelter for insects and small animals.

Garden Use:
Ideal for large walls, fences, trellises, and pergolas. Effective for covering unsightly structures or creating fast-growing vertical green screens. Also suitable as ground cover for erosion control on banks or slopes. Can be grown into large trees or over garden buildings.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with shade-tolerant groundcovers like Vinca minor, Hosta, Ferns, and Brunnera. For contrast, use with ornamental grasses or autumn-flowering perennials like Sedum, Anemone, or Aster. Avoid pairing with delicate climbers that may be overwhelmed by its vigorous growth.
