Why Buy Me?

  • Fantastic Autumn foliage
  • Leaves change colour with the seasons

Growing Conditions

Light:
Partial shade to full shade. Performs best in dappled or light shade where its distinctive silvery-veined foliage maintains strong contrast. Tolerates full sun in cooler climates but leaf colour may fade in hot, sunny sites.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Adaptable to a variety of soils but avoid overly dry or compacted conditions for best growth.

Exposure:
Ideal for north- or east-facing walls, fences, trellises, or large tree trunks. Can also be used as a ground cover in shady spots. Shelter from harsh winds helps preserve leaf quality.

Drought Tolerance:
Low to moderate. Requires regular watering during establishment and in prolonged dry periods. Performs best with consistent moisture, especially during hot spells or in full sun.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when the soil is moist and temperatures are mild. Autumn planting gives roots time to establish before winter.

Spacing:
Space 1.5–2 m (5–6.5 ft) apart if planting multiple specimens. Will climb 4–6 m (13–20 ft) or more with support, depending on conditions.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water well during dry periods, especially in the first two years. Feed with a general-purpose balanced fertilizer in early spring to support lush foliage and steady growth.

Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning Group 11:
Prune in late winter or early spring to control size and remove any dead or straggly stems. Can be cut back hard if needed; regrows well from established roots.

Propagation:
Propagate by hardwood or softwood cuttings, or by layering. Fast to root and establish, especially in moist, shaded areas.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New leaves emerge with striking silvery-white veins against bronze to dark green backgrounds. Shoots begin to climb or spread vigorously.

Summer:
Foliage matures to deep green with persistent silver veining. Provides dense coverage and attractive texture. Unobtrusive green flowers may appear, followed by small blue-black berries if pollinated.

Autumn:
Leaves turn vivid shades of red and burgundy in autumn before falling—most pronounced in cooler weather and partially sunny sites.

Winter:
Deciduous. Stems remain bare but provide subtle architectural interest. Can be pruned during dormancy.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract occasional pollinators. Berries may be eaten by birds in autumn. Dense foliage offers cover for insects and small garden wildlife.

Garden Use:
Excellent climber or ground cover for shady walls, fences, tree trunks, or banks. A beautiful choice for softening structures or adding vertical interest in low-light areas. Suitable for woodland gardens, shaded courtyards, or north-facing walls where other climbers struggle.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with shade-tolerant perennials like Hosta, Ferns, Pulmonaria, Heuchera, and Brunnera. Contrasts nicely with white or chartreuse foliage and complements other climbers like Hydrangea petiolaris or Clematis montana in shadier areas.
