    Growing Conditions

    Light:
Thrives in partial shade to full shade, although it can tolerate morning sun. In warmer or sunnier parts of the UK, provide afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch and maintain the vibrant golden leaf margins.

    Soil:
Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Performs best in neutral to slightly acidic soils. Avoid waterlogged or compacted soils to reduce the risk of root rot.

    Exposure:
Best planted in a sheltered position away from strong winds and harsh midday sun. Hardy throughout the UK.

    Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, but thrives with consistent moisture. Ensure soil does not dry out completely during hot or dry spells.

    Cultivation & Care

    Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting promotes strong seasonal growth, while autumn planting allows roots to develop before dormancy.

    Spacing:
Allow 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) between plants. Mature size typically reaches about 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) tall and 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) wide.

    Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Avoid wetting the leaves to minimise fungal problems.

    Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the crown. Cut back foliage after the first frost in autumn to tidy the plant and reduce pest issues.

    Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Dividing every 4–5 years helps maintain vigour.

    Seasonal Interest

    Spring:
Leaves emerge with a bright, golden-yellow margin surrounding rich medium green centres, providing vibrant early-season colour and contrast.

    Summer:
Margins often become a softer creamy yellow, and the leaves mature with a thick, slightly corrugated texture. Pale lavender flowers appear on tall scapes from mid to late summer, attracting pollinators.

    Autumn:
Foliage holds well into autumn before dying back with the first frost, adding late-season colour to shaded garden areas.

    Winter:
Deciduous — dies back fully in winter. Remove dead foliage after frost to prepare for new growth in spring.

    Wildlife & Garden Use

    Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and pollinators, supporting local biodiversity.

    Garden Use:
Ideal for shady borders, woodland gardens, or containers. Its golden leaf margins brighten dark, shaded corners and provide year-round interest alongside darker or variegated foliage plants.

    Companion Plants:
    Pairs well with:

    • Heuchera varieties (such as ‘Obsidian’, ‘Forever Purple’, ‘Marmalade’)

    • Ferns

    • Astilbe

    • Brunnera

    • Pulmonaria

Combines well with plants featuring deep greens, blues, purples, and silvers, as well as flowers in soft pink, white, and lavender shades.
