Growing Conditions
Light:
Performs best in partial shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. In cooler UK climates, it may handle more sun, but afternoon shade is recommended in sunnier regions to protect the foliage from bleaching or scorch and to maintain its vibrant variegation.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. Grows best in neutral to slightly acidic soils. Avoid waterlogged or heavy soils to prevent crown and root rot.
Exposure:
Grow in a sheltered position, out of strong winds and harsh sunlight. Hardy in most UK gardens, but may benefit from mulch or protection in very cold, exposed areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established, though consistent moisture supports the best foliage colour and health. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn. Spring planting encourages vigorous seasonal growth; autumn planting allows roots to settle in before winter.
Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Mature plants form a tidy mound approximately 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) tall and 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) wide.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water well during the first growing season. Once established, water during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid high nitrogen feeds, which can reduce leaf colour intensity.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the crown. Cut back tired or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Deadhead flowers to extend blooming and keep the plant looking tidy.
Propagation:
Divide every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to rejuvenate clumps. Propagation is also possible via basal cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Striking foliage emerges in a deep black-purple, speckled with vivid hot pink spots, giving the plant a dramatic appearance. The variegation is most vivid in spring and early summer.
Summer:
Foliage colour remains intense, particularly in part shade. Small, creamy-pink flowers rise on slender stems from late spring into early summer, providing a soft contrast and attracting pollinators.
Autumn:
Leaf spotting may soften slightly with cooler temperatures, but the rich purple base colour remains attractive. Maintains compact form and vibrant tones into autumn.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in most of the UK. In colder areas, some dieback may occur, but plants usually regrow strongly in spring. Offers useful winter structure in sheltered sites.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
The flowers are nectar-rich and attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly plantings.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, containers, shade gardens, woodland edges, or as a statement plant in mixed perennial schemes. Its unusual foliage colour and pattern provide a dramatic contrast in both sunny and shaded settings.
