Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun or partial shade is ideal. Requires at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive. Tolerates light shade, making it suitable for woodland gardens.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil, adaptable to various types including loam, sand, and clay. Thrives in neutral to alkaline pH but can tolerate slightly acidic conditions. Avoid waterlogged soils to prevent root rot.
Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered position, protected from cold, drying winds. Hardy in milder parts of the UK, but may suffer in very cold, wet winters. In colder regions, grow near a wall or in containers for protection.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established. Tolerates dry conditions but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells. Requires good drainage to prevent root rot.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before summer heat or winter chill.
Spacing:
Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Grows into a bushy clump up to 45 cm (18 inches) tall and wide.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. Apply a light general-purpose feed in early spring to encourage blooming, but avoid overfeeding which can reduce flower longevity.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the base of stems. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong blooming. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape. Avoid hard pruning into old wood as this may not regrow.
Propagation:
Best propagated by division in spring. Seeds may not come true to type. Replace plants every 2–3 years as they can become woody and less floriferous over time.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Begins blooming early in spring with masses of lime-green flowers on upright spikes. Provides vibrant colour when few other plants are in flower.
Summer:
Continuous flowering through summer if deadheaded. Attractive purple evergreen foliage offers year-round structure and contrast.
Autumn:
May continue flowering into early autumn. Foliage remains attractive as temperatures cool.
Winter:
Evergreen. Keeps its foliage throughout winter in mild climates, adding colour and texture to the garden even when not in bloom.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attractive to bees and butterflies. Excellent nectar source over a long flowering period. A great choice for wildlife-friendly planting.
Garden Use:
Ideal for shady borders, woodland gardens, and ground cover. Provides colour continuity between spring and summer displays. Often used to soften hard edges or add vertical accents in mixed plantings.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with ferns, Hostas, Hellebores, and other shade-loving plants. Contrasts beautifully with silver-leaved plants and spring-flowering bulbs
Please note: Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Purpurea' contains a milky sap that can be an irritant to skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
